# What is SaaS software history?

In 1999, Salesforce launched its customer relationship management (CRM) platform as the first SaaS solution built from scratch to achieve record growth. 

In its infancy, the SaaS model was thought to be only for startups and small businesses. It was considered to be closed, slow, and unstable. But over the next several years, improvements to the internet that meant little to the traditional software industry did much for SaaS.  

In the earliest days of the SaaS industry, it was believed that subscription-based software would not be viable for enterprise business. However, its exponential growth and continued improvements to its functionality make it a good option for enterprise-level businesses. It is also much cheaper and easier to use.
