# What is The Difference Between a Video Server, an NVR, and a DVR?

At its core, both **NVR** and **DVR** serve the purpose of video recording. The difference between them is how they process video data. **DVR** (Digital Video Recorder) takes video footage directly from the cameras with the help of the coaxial cable and then begins processing it for recording. Whereas **NVR** (Network Video Recorder) works to record and save video footage taken from the network that it lives on.
